First Birthday Outfit Ideas

A first birthday goes by in a blur – the cake, the balloons, the grandparents, the nap that never quite happens. But the photos stay forever, and the outfit is in every one of them. That's why so many parents want something that feels special, and why we've spent years designing first birthday clothes here in our little print room in Kent.

Here are some of our favourite ideas, plus a few practical tips for the big day.

Pick a theme they (or you) love

A theme ties the outfit, cake and party together and makes the photos look lovely. A few of our most popular:

Safari animals

Lions, giraffes, zebras and elephants never go out of style. The Wild Safari "I Am One" outfit gathers the animals around a bold message with their name.

Don't forget the morning

One of our favourite ideas is a "When I Wake Up I Will Be One" sleepsuit, for the night before. They go to bed at eleven months and wake up one – and you get a gorgeous photo first thing. Try the Pink Safari "When I Wake Up" sleepsuit.

Sleepsuit, vest, t-shirt or jumper?

• Vest – lovely for cake smash photos and warm days.
• Sleepsuit – cosy, covers the legs, and great for the morning photo.
• T-shirt – easy to pair with shorts, leggings or a skirt for the party.
• Jumper – ideal for autumn and winter birthdays. The "First Trip Around the Sun" jumper is brushed soft on the inside.

Celebrating Mummy or Daddy instead?

It's not only the baby who has a first! Our "1st Birthday as my Mummy" and "Daddy" outfits are worn by the baby to celebrate a parent's first birthday in that role – a really sweet surprise from the little one.

Our practical tips

• If unsure, size up. Babies grow fast, and a little room makes for comfier photos.
• Wash with care. Wash inside out at 30°C, don't tumble dry, and iron on the reverse – the print will last much longer.
• Order in good time. Every outfit is printed to order, and faster postal upgrades are available at checkout.
• Check the spelling. As each item is personalised, we can't accept returns unless faulty.
